Chamber releases September Jobs & Policy Update

The Massachusetts Jobs & Policy Update is a monthly update that provides public officials with insight into state and regional job trends, as well as a snapshot of policy issues that are critical to the region's business community. Below are highlights from the September Jobs & Policy Update:

  • State added 2,100 jobs in August; 7th consecutive month of job growth. State posted 1.5% job growth last 12 months, considerably higher than the U.S. rate of 0.2%.
  • State unemployment fell to 8.8% (lowest since August 2009), and remained well below the U.S. rate of 9.6%.
  •  Six of 12 regions added jobs last month; half of regions added jobs year-over-year, with Merrimack Valley and Metro South regions showing high strongest growth.
  • All private sector industries added jobs last month.
  • Leisure & Hospitality (+2,800) and Professional & Business Services (2,700) posted largest monthly job gains.

This Week at the Chamber

Wednesday not only marks the autumnal equinox, but the start of the fall speaker event series at the Chamber.
  • Later today, the Chamber will release its latest Jobs & Policy Update showing yet another increase in private sector jobs in Massachusetts.
  • On Wednesday, we welcome Martin Madaus, former chairman, president, and CEO of Millipore Corporation as the featured speaker for the Innovation Forum. The event kicks off at 7:45 a.m. at the Omni Parker House. Click here for more details.
  • On Thursday, the Women's Network presents a panel discussion entitled "Effective Leadership in the Public Sector." Moderated by Charlotte Golar Richie, speakers include State Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz, State Representative Linda Dorcena Forry, and Registrar Rachel Kaprielian. We'll be at the Boston Harbor Hotel, with registration open at 7:45 a.m. Click here to register.
  • Chamber CEO Paul Guzzi will make his weekly WBZ-AM 1030 on Thursday morning, and goes "On the Record" with NECN on Thursday evening at 6:45 p.m. during the "New England Business Day" program.

'This Week in Business' - News at UMass & Jill Stein on job creation

Yesterday on 'This Week in Business,' UMass president Jack Wilson joined hosts Paul Guzzi and Mike Nikitas to discuss a recent report by The Times of London ranking the university as one of the top in the world. Coming in at number 56, UMass was the only public institution from New England to make the list. Wilson also commented on other happenings at the university.

In the Briefing Room, Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate Jill Stein of the Green-Rainbow party joined to discuss her platform for the campaign and her ideas for job creation. She is the first of the four candidates to be interviewed.

This Week at the Chamber

The Chamber's fall program season officially gets underway this week!
  • Join us tomorrow morning for the first Chamber Networking Group of the fall season. Held at Rebecca's Cafe at One Beacon Street, this free event is a great opportunity for members to expand their network and make valuable connections. A contintental breakfast will be served.   • The state's August jobs data will be released later this week, and the Chamber will be blasting its latest Jobs & Policy Update. Last month, data showed that Massachusetts added nearly 19,000 private sector jobs in July. We will post the update to the blog.
  • Chamber CEO Paul Guzzi will make his usual appearances on WBZ-AM 1030 on Thursday morning, and "On the Record" on New England Cable News Business Day at 6:45 p.m. that evening.

Chamber Announces 2010 'Small Business of the Year' Award Honorees

The Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce today announced the winners of its 2010 Small Business of the Year Awards, to be held on October 14, 2010. Sagamore Plumbing & Heating was chosen as the ‘Small Business of the Year.’ Cedar’s Mediterranean Foods will receive the ‘Award for Business Excellence’ and Joanne Chang, pastry chef and owner of Flour Bakery & Café, will be honored with the ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ Award.

This year’s Small Business of the Year Awards Luncheon will be held at the Colonnade Hotel on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 12 p.m. Scott Griffith, chairman and CEO of Zipcar, will be the event’s featured speaker.

Beige Book findings & President Obama's economic proposals 'On the Record'

Last night, Chamber EVP Jim Klocke went 'On the Record' with NECN's RD Sahl to discuss the recent Beige Book report indicating that New England's economy is outperforming the nation, the impact that President Obama's economic proposals could have on the Commonwealth, and the potential negative implications of rolling back the state sales tax.

This Week at the Chamber

We'll be announcing our Small Business of the Year winners this week! Plus, with Labor Day behind us, we're gearing up for an early start to the fall programs season.
  • Later today, we will mail our September calendar of events to all of our members. There are going to be lots of opportunities to get engaged this month, and we have a great lineup of speakers.
  • On Thursday, we will announce the Small Business of the Year winner, Entrepreneur of the Year winner, and Business Excellence Award winner. All three honorees will be recognized at the Annual Small Business of the Year Awards luncheon on Thursday, October 14. Click here to register.
  • The Women's Network Pinnacle Awards nomination period is officially open! We'll be e-mailing the nomination forms to all members of the Women's Network this week. Know anyone who you think should be considered? Download the nomination form. All nominations are due to the Chamber by September 16. And save the date for the Pinnacle Awards luncheon on January 27 at the Westin Copley Place Boston!
