Chamber monthly jobs update shows loss of 400 jobs in MA in August

The Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce publishes the monthly Massachusetts Jobs Update to provide public officials with a snapshot of regional and national job markets and trends. The Chamber is currently working with business and government leaders to advance a policy agenda that will have significant impact on job growth and economic growth in the years ahead -including priority issues of health care reform, skilled workforce development, and corporate tax policy.

August Headlines:
  • Massachusetts lost 400 jobs in August; falls to 198,100 jobs below previous peak
  • All 12 regions shed jobs over last 12 months; Greater Boston and North Shore regions added most jobs in August
  • State posted 3.2% job loss last 12 months; moderately better than U.S. job loss rate of 4.3%
  • State manufacturing job growth (-5.9%) ranked 6th among states last 12 months
